Hong Kong, 2 January 2023: We are pleased to announce that our Senior Partner Colin Cohen has been co-opted as a member of the Law Society of Hong Kong’s newly formed Sports Law Committee.
The body will review and comment on legal issues relating to sports in Hong Kong, including dispute resolution, contracts, intellectual property, personal injuries and employment law. Where appropriate, it will liaise with the government and external bodies.
Says Colin: “Major advances in media, technology and the global marketplace have revolutionised sport and turned it into a multi-billion-dollar industry. As a result, sports law is one of the fastest growing and most complex fields in the legal profession and one that offers unique challenges to law firms with an array of commercial, regulatory and even moral issues to be considered.
“As we have seen with Hong Kong’s recent international successes, especially in the Olympic Games, the sports industry here is becoming increasingly elite-level. Therefore, the Law Society’s decision to set up the Sports Law Committee is most welcome.”
Colin currently sits on the disciplinary panel of Cricket Hong Kong and is former Honorary Secretary of Hong Kong Football Club, where he helped oversee the staging of international football, rugby and squash tournaments. He delivered a presentation, “Advantage Hong Kong? The Future of Sports Arbitration in Asia”, at the 2019 LAWASIA Conference where he also participated in a panel discussion on sports law.
